What yoga poses help with total body relaxation?

Mister.Yoga — Relaxation & Stress Relief

Lia

Hi everyone 🌿 I’ve been feeling super tense lately (shoulders up to my ears, jaw clenched, low back tight). I’m not looking for a workout—more like “reset my nervous system” vibes. I do a bit of yoga from YouTube, but I get overwhelmed by long flows and I’m never sure which poses actually relax the whole body instead of just stretching one area.

What yoga poses help with total body relaxation, especially in the evening before bed? Bonus points if you can suggest a short sequence (like 10–15 minutes) and any breathing tips. I’m pretty stiff and I don’t want anything that feels intense or painful.

Ananda

For total body relaxation, choose postures that soothe the breath and invite the mind inward. Begin with a few minutes of diaphragmatic breathing (slow inhale, longer exhale). When the exhale lengthens, the nervous system softens and prana flows more evenly.

Gentle, grounding poses: Balasana (Child’s Pose), Supta Baddha Konasana (Reclined Bound Angle), Viparita Karani (Legs Up the Wall), and Savasana. Place a hand on the heart and a hand on the belly in Savasana and feel the breath connect mind and body.

Energetically, these support downward flow (apana) and calm the heart center. If you like, add a soft humming exhale (like a quiet bhramari) to settle the mind. If anxiety or insomnia is strong, a teacher or therapist can help you tailor a practice safely.

Ok yes, evening “full body exhale” is the vibe 😌✨ For total body relaxation, keep it SIMPLE and cozy.

My 10–12 min go-to:

1) Child’s Pose (1–2 min) + slow nose breathing

2) Cat-Cow (1 min) to un-crunch spine

3) Supine twist (1 min each side)

4) Happy Baby (30–60 sec, gentle)

5) Legs Up the Wall (3–5 min)

6) Savasana (2–3 min)

Breath tip: inhale 4, exhale 6. Longer exhale = calmer brain. Also: prop it up! Pillow under knees in Savasana = instant relax glow up 💗 If anything pinches, back off or skip.

Ravi

Relaxation is not collapse. It is alignment with low effort.

Do these. In order.

1. Makarasana (Crocodile). Forehead on hands. Belly breath. 2 minutes.

2. Balasana. Knees wide. Spine long. Do not push the hips. 2 minutes.

3. Supta Matsyendrasana (supine twist). Shoulder stays down. 1 minute each side.

4. Viparita Karani. Sacrum supported if needed. Legs passive. 5 minutes.

5. Savasana. Chin slightly tucked. Palms up. 3 minutes.

Breath: silent nasal breathing. Exhale longer than inhale. No strain.

Oh Lia, I feel you 💜 When my shoulders and jaw are tight, Yin yoga is like a warm blanket for the nervous system 😌🕯️

For total body relaxation, try long, supported holds:

- Supported Child’s Pose (bolster/pillow under chest) 🥰

- Reclined Butterfly (pillows under knees) 🦋

- Legs Up the Wall (tiny bend in knees is ok!)

- Supported twist (hug a pillow) 🌙

- Savasana with a blanket over you 🧸

Stay 2–5 minutes each, and breathe like you’re “sighing” through the nose (soft, slow exhale). If emotions come up, totally normal 💗 If pain shows up, back out gently.

Teo

Total body relaxation? Easy: stop watching “10 min booty yoga sculpt” influencers pretending it’s “calming” while they do handstands in designer sets 🙃

Real relaxing poses are the boring ones everyone skips because they don’t look cool on Instagram:

- Legs up the wall

- Child’s pose

- Supine twist

- Savasana (yes, actually stay there)

And breathe like a normal human. Slow. Quiet. If a pose feels like a struggle, it’s not relaxation, it’s content creation 😅

Nina

Following because same 😭🧘‍♀️ I started like 3 weeks ago and I’m soooo stiff. When people say “relax your shoulders” I’m like… which button is that? 😅

Question: in Child’s Pose my hips don’t reach my heels and I feel embarrassed in class 🙈 is it ok to put a pillow between legs? Also in Savasana my lower back feels weird sometimes—do you put something under knees?

And random: does a thicker mat help for relaxing poses? I have a cheap one and it’s kinda slippery 😬

For “total body relaxation” I think in terms of downshifting sympathetic tone to improve sleep, HRV, and next-day performance. The highest ROI poses are the ones that enable long exhales and reduce muscle guarding.

Protocol I use at night:

- 5 min Legs Up the Wall (nasal breathing, exhale longer)

- 2 min Supine twist each side

- 3–5 min Savasana with legs elevated on a couch/bolster

Optional: 1–2 min of box breathing (4-4-6-2 works well) IF it doesn’t feel activating. Track with a wearable: if HRV goes up and resting HR drops, you’re doing it right. If you have significant anxiety/insomnia, pairing this with professional support is worth it.

Omg Liaaaa total body relax is like… moon-bath for your muscles 🌙💗✨ I do “cozy chakra time” with:

- Legs up the wall (I pretend I’m charging my aura lol)

- Reclined butterfly 🦋 (rose quartz on heart, if you’re into crystals)

- Supine twist (wringing out the bad vibes hehe)

- Savasana (manifesting peace 😌)

Breath: inhale love, exhale stress!!! Also I swear lavender + dim lights makes everything 10x softer. If your body says “nope,” listen—gentle only 💞

Dario

Not gonna lie, my version of “relaxation” usually comes AFTER I sweat my soul out in hot yoga 😅 The heat makes my whole body finally let go.

But if you’re doing evening calm at home, I still recommend warming up a tiny bit (like 1–2 minutes of easy Cat-Cow) so your back doesn’t feel crunchy. Then:

- Forward fold seated (very gentle)

- Supine twist

- Legs up the wall

- Long Savasana

If you ever try hot classes: hydrate, don’t push, and remember “detox” is mostly a marketing word—sweating feels amazing but listen to your body.

Hi Lia 💜 If there’s any chance you’re pregnant (or trying), total body relaxation can still be wonderful, just a bit more gentle and supported 😊

My calming favorites (also great for anyone):

- Side-lying rest (left side is often comfy) with a pillow between knees 🥰

- Cat-Cow (slow, no forcing)

- Supported Child’s Pose (knees wide, pillow under chest)

- Legs Up the Wall (if it feels good; otherwise elevate legs on a chair)

- Seated breathing with hands on ribs

Breathing: slow inhale through the nose, longer exhale like you’re fogging a mirror (but gently). If you have dizziness, pain, bleeding, or high-risk pregnancy, please check with your healthcare provider first ❤️

People think relaxation is just “stretching.” It’s not. It’s frequency. Modern life keeps you in a constant low-grade fight-or-flight signal.

The poses that work best are the ones that open the subtle channels (nadis) and let the third eye stop buzzing from screens: Legs Up the Wall, supine twists, and long stillness in Savasana.

Try it in a dark room, airplane mode, no Wi‑Fi near your head if possible. Breathe slow, and you’ll feel the body “recalibrate.” Ancient practices were designed for this—before the noise.

Zenio

Lie down.

Breathe out.

Let the floor hold you.

That is the pose.

ValeFit

As a former “stretching is optional” CrossFit person… yoga for total body relaxation is basically recovery gold 😅💪

My post-training / pre-bed combo:

- Child’s Pose (lat + low back release)

- Thread the Needle (shoulders 🔥 but keep it gentle)

- Supine twist (spine decompression)

- Legs up the wall (feet feel brand new)

- Savasana (the hardest part lol)

Tip: use props like you’re doing smart programming, not punishment. If you’re super tight, a pillow under knees in Savasana is a game changer 🙌

Chiara

For total body relaxation I love making it a whole little evening ritual 🕯️💜

My staples: Legs Up the Wall + a light eye pillow, then a long Savasana with a soft blanket. If you have a premium mat (thicker + grippy) it honestly helps you settle because you’re not fidgeting.

Also: dim lighting, a clean space, and comfy leggings that don’t pinch your waist = instant calmer nervous system 😌✨ (Not saying you need expensive stuff, but comfort matters.)

Kiran

For deep relaxation, allow the body to become still so the prana can move and the mind can soften. A simple, safe sequence:

1) Supta Baddha Konasana (supported) — 3 minutes.

2) Viparita Karani — 5 minutes.

3) Savasana — 7 minutes.

Add a gentle mantra internally on the breath, such as “Sat” on inhale and “Nam” on exhale, to steady the mind. Do not force any stretch. If dizziness or agitation arises, return to natural breathing and rest. For deeper work with kundalini, learn with a qualified teacher.

Pippo

Total body relaxation is when you attempt “Happy Baby” and your body is like: “No thanks, I’m an Angry Adult.” 😂

Jokes aside, Legs Up the Wall is the only pose where I feel like I’m winning at yoga without trying. Then twisty floor pretzel thing (supine twist), then Savasana where I accidentally plan tomorrow’s errands for 6 minutes 😅

Lorenza

You can absolutely get total body relaxation without getting down on the floor, too. If you want something very gentle (or on low-energy days), try this seated sequence:

- Seated belly breathing: 10 slow breaths.

- Shoulder rolls and gentle neck side stretch (no forcing).

- Seated cat-cow: hands on knees, slow movement.

- Seated twist: keep hips facing forward, rotate softly.

- Legs on an ottoman or another chair for 3–5 minutes, then quiet breathing.

Move within comfort. If you have pain, dizziness, or balance issues, practicing with an instructor can help you feel safe.

Giada

For total body relaxation, I love pairing gentle evening yoga with grounding routines. Poses like Child’s Pose, Reclined Butterfly, and Legs Up the Wall are very “vata-calming” (especially when you’re feeling scattered and tense).

After practice, a warm herbal tea can support the wind-down: chamomile, tulsi, or warm water with a little ginger if digestion feels heavy (keep it mild). A cozy blanket in Savasana + slow exhale breathing is honestly medicine for the mind.

If stress is chronic, consider getting personalized guidance from a qualified yoga teacher or practitioner.

Tizi

Ok but like… if I do these relaxing poses every day will I get flexible faster?? 😭🔥 I’m trying to unlock splits ASAP and my hamstrings are literally made of concrete.

Is it better to hold stuff like forward folds for 5–10 mins (yin style) or do more reps? I wanna relax AND progress fast lol 😅

Irene

Yoga for total body relaxation genuinely helped my anxiety, especially at night when my brain won’t stop 💗

The pose that changed everything for me is Legs Up the Wall. It’s the first time my body feels “safe” without trying. Then I do a gentle twist and Savasana with one hand on my chest so I don’t float away in thoughts.

Small tip: I put my phone in another room. If it’s nearby, I can’t fully relax 😅🌙

Paolo

In the Yoga Sutras, the path toward steadiness is described as easing the fluctuations of the mind (citta vritti). For total body relaxation, we’re not chasing a perfect shape; we’re cultivating a state where effort softens and attention becomes clear.

Restorative postures like Savasana and Viparita Karani support pratyahara (turning inward). Pair them with gentle, extended exhalation and a simple focal point (breath at the nostrils, or the feeling of the body supported by the ground).

If the mind is very restless, short consistent practice often works better than long ambitious sessions.

Ludo

When I was in Bali on a yoga retreat 🌴🧘‍♂️ we did this super relaxing night flow and I swear I slept like a baby after, no joke.

Try: legs up the wall 5 min, reclined butterfly 3 min, then savasana 5-10. Also put on a yoga nidra audio. It’s literaly a reset.

And do a digital detox, like no screens 1 hour before bed, it help sooo much ✨

Enzo

Which poses help with total body relaxation? Define outcome.

For sleep: evidence is stronger for slow breathing/relaxation practices than for any single pose. Studies on yoga show improvements in perceived stress and sleep quality, but protocols vary.

Practical picks: Legs Up the Wall, Savasana, gentle supine twists. Keep intensity low. Track sleep and next-day fatigue for 2 weeks. If insomnia is persistent, consider CBT-I or professional support.

Ari

If you ever get the chance, aerial yoga is AMAZING for relaxation because the hammock holds you 😍🪽 It’s like being in a cocoon.

For “total body relax” in the air: supported savasana in the hammock, gentle floating pigeon (very mild), and a little suspended forward fold where your spine decompresses (with an instructor spotting!).

At home on the floor, I still vote Legs Up the Wall + Savasana. But if your body likes being supported, aerial is the ultimate vibe ✨

Marta

Lia, you’re so not alone 🫶💜 The fact that you’re asking for gentle, non-intense poses is already a really kind way to care for yourself.

For total body relaxation, it’s totally okay to choose “easy” shapes and use props. A pillow under knees, a blanket, anything that helps your body feel supported is valid yoga 🤍

If you want a simple 10–15 min routine: Child’s Pose → gentle twist → Legs Up the Wall → Savasana. And if your stress feels bigger than yoga can hold right now, reaching out to a professional is a strong, brave step too 🫶✨
