Hi everyone, I keep seeing people mention “advanced tantric breathing exercises” in yoga circles and I’m not totally sure what that actually means in practice. I’ve done basic pranayama (like simple alternate nostril breathing) and some guided breathwork, but I’m cautious because I’ve also heard that some intense techniques can make you dizzy or emotionally overwhelmed.
I’m interested for two reasons: (1) I’m trying to deepen my meditation and nervous system regulation, and (2) I’m curious about the tantra side beyond the internet stereotypes. What counts as “advanced” in tantric breathing? Is it just longer breath holds, or is it about bandhas, mudras, energy work, and visualization? And if someone wants to explore safely, what are reasonable next steps (teacher, style, red flags, etc.)?
Would love explanations in plain language, and maybe a few examples of what practices are considered advanced—without turning it into risky DIY advice.
