how do I stop slipping on my yoga mat?

Mister.Yoga — Yoga Basics & Gear Help

Giada

Hi everyone, I’m pretty new to yoga (about 2 months) and I keep slipping on my mat, especially in Downward Dog and any lunge where my hands are planted. It’s honestly distracting because I’m thinking more about not face-planting than breathing 😅

Context: I practice at home in my living room. I don’t think I’m sweating a ton, but my palms do get a bit damp. My mat is a basic one I got online (it felt grippy at first, now it’s kind of slick). I’ve tried wiping it with a wet cloth once, but it didn’t change much.

Any realistic tips to stop slipping on a yoga mat? Like, cleaning routines, towel hacks, whether it’s my form, or if I just need a better mat? I’m not trying to buy the most expensive thing if I can fix it another way. Thanks 🙏

Ananda

Beloved Giada, slipping often has two roots: the outer surface (mat + hands) and the inner surface (breath + steadiness). First, before you begin, take a moment to rub your palms together until warm, then place them down with intention—feel the flow of prana traveling from heart to hands.

Practically: wash the mat gently with a few drops of mild soap, then let it fully dry away from direct sun. If palms get damp, keep a small towel nearby and pause to breathe—slow inhales through the nose, long exhales. When the breath steadies, the body distributes weight more evenly, and the hands “press” instead of “slide.”

Ok bestie this is SO common 😭✨ If you’re slipping in Down Dog, it’s usually a combo of: sweaty palms + mat getting kinda “filmy.”

Try this glow-up routine: quick mat wipe (water + tiny bit of gentle soap), let it dry fully, and during practice use a hand towel at the top of the mat OR a yoga towel. Also: spread your fingers WIDE and really press knuckles down (not just the heel of the hand). If it’s a cheap mat that went slick, upgrading to a grippier one might be the move, but try the cleaning + towel hack first 🙌🧘‍♀️

Do not blame only the mat.

In Adho Mukha Svanasana:

1) Hands shoulder-width. Fingers spread.

2) Index finger points forward.

3) Press base of index and thumb. Lift inner wrist.

4) Engage arms. Do not dump weight into the heel of the hand.

Clean the mat. Dry it. If still slippery, replace it with a higher-friction surface.

Oh Giada, I hear you 🥺💜 Slipping pulls you right out of the moment.

A gentle approach: before practice, wash your hands, dry them well, and keep a soft towel close. If you notice damp palms, just pause, breathe, and reset—no rush 🕯️✨ In yin we always say “listen first.”

Also, some mats get slippery from body oils/cleaners over time. A mild soap + water wipe, then air dry, can make a big difference. And if it still feels unsafe, it’s totally okay to invest in a mat with better grip—your nervous system will relax when you feel stable 🤍🧘‍♀️💫

Welcome to the part of yoga nobody posts on IG: the sweaty-hand slip-n-slide 🙃

Real yoga isn’t posing for Instagram, it’s trying not to eat your mat in Down Dog 😂🔥

Clean the mat (most people never do). Stop using random scented sprays that leave residue. Use a towel if your palms get damp. And yeah—some cheap mats turn into ice rinks. If yours is one of those, no amount of “intention” will fix polymer physics.

Lia

Omg SAME 😭🙏 I’m like 3 weeks in and I slip the most in Down Dog and Plank. It makes me feel so awkward even when I’m alone 😅

Can I ask: do you also feel like your wrists hurt when you try to “grip” the mat? I’m confused about how hard to press. Also what kind of mat do you have (like thickness)? I got a super soft one and I wonder if that makes it worse 🤔🧘‍♀️

Teo

Slipping is usually surface friction + sweat chemistry + ambient humidity. If you want a repeatable fix:

- Degrease the mat weekly (mild dish soap diluted, rinse cloth, wipe again). Residual oils reduce coefficient of friction.

- Control sweat: wash hands pre-session; keep a small towel; consider liquid chalk (climbers use it) if you’re not sensitive to it.

- Improve load distribution: in Down Dog, push through fingertips/knuckles to reduce shear force.

Also, if you’re practicing after caffeine or high-stress days, sympathetic activation can increase palm sweat. Try 2 minutes nasal breathing before starting—better HRV, less slippery hands, better performance.

Hiii Giadaaa 🌙💗 ok so slipping = the vibes are like “woooosh” 😭✨

Practical magic: cleanse the mat (like a lil ritual) + let it dry, then sprinkle a tiny bit of intentionnnn. If your hands are sweaty, towel on the mat is legit. Also sometimes during full moon my hands are like WATER?? idk 😂

If you get a new mat, pick one that feels “grounding” (earthy colors, grippy texture) and put a crystal near it for stable energyyy 🧘‍♀️🔮💕

Dario

If there’s any heat in your room, you’re basically doing mini-hot yoga and the sweat will win.

In hot classes we solve it with a full-size yoga towel with corner grips OR a super grippy mat made for sweat. Wiping hands mid-flow isn’t “breaking practice,” it’s staying safe.

Also: check the floor under the mat. If the mat itself slides on tile/wood, put a thin rug pad under it. Two kinds of slipping = two different fixes.

Hi Giada 🤍 if you ever practice while pregnant (or if anyone reading is), stability becomes extra important, so I’m really glad you’re asking.

For stopping slipping on a yoga mat, I suggest:

- Use a non-slip towel over the mat if hands get damp.

- Avoid fast transitions when you feel unstable.

- Consider yoga blocks to bring the floor “closer” so you don’t dump weight forward.

And please don’t push through a slippery feeling—step out, reset, breathe slowly 🫶🏼✨ Safety first always.

Orio

Slipping can be physical, sure, but it’s also frequency. Modern mats are mass-produced with chemical residues that don’t harmonize with your field.

Try cleansing: salt water wipe (very light), then let it air out. And practice a few breaths focusing on the third eye—when your awareness is coherent, your body organizes and “locks in.” Ancient practitioners used earth, grass, or woven cloth for a reason.

If your mat feels like it repels you, trust that signal.

Zenno

Grip is attention.

Clean.

Breathe.

Place the hand.

Do not rush.

Yo Giada—former CrossFit guy here 🙋‍♂️😅 slipping drove me nuts.

Two quick checks:

1) Is the MAT sliding on the floor? If yes, put a cheap anti-slip rug pad under it.

2) Are your HANDS sliding on the mat? If yes, towel or liquid chalk (test a small area first).

Form cue that helped me: “claw” the mat with fingertips and push the ground away like in a strong plank. Less wrist collapse = less slip. Your mobility work shouldn’t turn into a wipeout 😂💪

Elisa

Honestly a grippy mat is one of those quality-of-life upgrades 🥹💜✨ If yours started grippy and now feels slick, it might be oil buildup.

I wipe mine after practice and do a deeper clean weekly. Also if you’re practicing with lotion on your hands (even from earlier), it’s a guaranteed slip.

If you do decide to upgrade: look for “high grip” / “open-cell” style surfaces (they feel almost velvety). And yes, cute leggings + a pretty setup somehow makes me practice more 😂🧘‍♀️

Kiran

Giada, when the hands slip, the pranic connection through the palms (hasta) is disturbed. Begin with a short centering: long deep breathing, then rub the palms briskly and place them with reverence.

Practical support: keep the mat clean from oils. If perspiration is present, use a towel and slow the transitions. You can also practice a simple mantra internally—“Sat Nam”—to stabilize the mind. When the mind becomes steady, the body becomes steady.

Fede

Downward Dog: the pose where I discover my hands can hydroplane 😂🫠

My survival kit:

- wash hands (apparently moisturiser is not a yoga aid)

- wipe mat (because “mysterious slick layer” is real)

- towel for the spicy moments

Also if your mat is doing that dramatic slow slide across the floor, it’s basically trying to leave the class. Rug pad under it = peace ✌️😅

Pina

Ciao Giada, you’re not alone. Safety and stability come first.

If the mat feels slippery, you can modify your practice: do Downward Dog with hands on a sturdy chair or on a wall. This reduces the weight on the hands and prevents sliding. You still get the stretch and the breathing benefits.

Also check the floor: on smooth tiles, even a good mat can move. A thin non-slip underlay (like for rugs) can help a lot.

Iris

Slipping often comes from a mix of sweat + skin oils + environment. From an Ayurvedic lens, if you run a bit “pitta” (heat), the hands may perspire more.

Simple support: wash hands before practice, avoid heavy lotions, and wipe the mat with mild soap water to remove oils. After practice, a calming routine helps—warm herbal tea like cumin-coriander-fennel or tulsi can settle the system (if those suit you).

And of course, choose a mat that feels stable for your body—steadiness supports the breath.

Leo

Ok but like… I can’t progress if I’m sliding everywhere 😤😂💀

I want the FASTEST fix: do I just buy the grippiest mat and call it a day? Also does grip strength training help?? Like hanging or finger stuff??

Giada if you find a hack that works immediately tell me pls 🙏🔥

Noemi

I used to slip a lot and it made me anxious because I felt “bad at yoga” even though it’s just… physics 😅🧸

What helped me was creating a calmer start: wash hands, 3 slow breaths, then place my hands carefully and spread fingers. When I rushed, I slipped more. Also I realized my mat had lotion residue from my legs/hands.

If you’re practicing at home, it’s okay to pause and reset as many times as you need. Your practice is still valid 🤍

Tommi

In the Yoga Sutras, steadiness and ease—sthira and sukha—are a guiding principle for asana. A slippery mat disrupts both, so addressing it is not “gear obsession,” it’s supporting practice.

From a practical standpoint, cleanliness and appropriate tools matter. From a mental standpoint, notice how quickly the mind turns to frustration or self-judgment when the hands slide. Use it as a cue to return to breath and to non-harm (ahimsa): don’t force a pose when the foundation is unstable.

Lory

When I was in Bali on retreat I had the same problem bc its sooo humid 😅🌴✨ What helped me was a yoga towel + cleaning my mat like, every few days.

Also try practicing early morning, the vibe is more calm and you sweat less (for me). And if you can upgrade, do it… a good mat is literally a self care investment, you wont regret it 💕🧘‍♀️

Giorgio

What’s the mat material? PVC, TPE, rubber?

Slipping often comes from surface oils. Cleaning can restore friction. Evidence: surfactants remove lipids; friction increases.

If hands sweat, towel or chalk increases grip. Also check if the mat is moving on the floor. Two different problems.

Ari

Not gonna lie, this is why I love aerial sometimes—when you’re in the hammock you’re not sliding anywhere 😂💖

But for mat practice: a yoga towel is a game changer, especially for hands. Also try placing your hands slightly more forward in Down Dog only if it helps you distribute weight—sometimes being too short in the stance makes you dump pressure and slip.

And if your mat is old/slick, don’t feel bad replacing it. You deserve a stable base 🫶🧘‍♀️✨

Franci

Giada, you’re doing great for even noticing what’s happening and asking 🥹💜 This is such a common issue and it can feel scary when you’re trying to relax.

A few gentle, practical steps:

- Wash hands + dry well before starting 🙏

- Wipe mat with mild soapy water (not oily sprays), let it dry fully ✨

- If palms get damp, put a small towel at the top of the mat or use a yoga towel 🤍

- If the mat slides on the floor, add a non-slip rug pad underneath

And please prioritize feeling safe over “pushing through.” If you ever feel unstable, take a break, come to Child’s Pose, breathe, and reset 🫶💞
